Although I do all the damage singing and playing here, this song's origins lie elsewhere. Davenports co-founder, songwriter, and lead guitarist Mike Koehn wrote the excellent main riff 25 years ago circa 1999, and I added the little picking tag to the end of it. I had a whole other song written around this arrangement for years but never got to it. I always loved Mike's riff, tho, and I decided to pair it with a lyrical concept that Davs drummer Scott Schwister told me about more recently. He related the cultural term "fuck you money," wherein it's always a good idea for an employee to have on hand enough cash to sustain him/herself for an indeterminate period of time if your employer crosses the line and you have to walk. I thought the phrase was hilarious and true and applies here, even tho I use different words.
Song versions with Schwisterian drumming/alt mix and acapella forthcoming.

Lyrics
I got the news, and
I cleaned out my office,
took it home.
I'm once again the odd man out,
again my bread is toast.
'Cause I spent all my goodbye money
on guitars.
Now I'll have to read the script that's
coming my way near and my way far.

I took it for the team when I took it on.
I took it for the team when I let it go.
It really is a shame that it's past and gone.
I could really play when I was left alone.
