Lyrics
"Near South"
Vs. 1
Window sill, barefoot, summer, Jim and Tom,
folk music, Beach Boys, hi-fi headphones on.
Young ideals and big harmonies make spine tingle,
Falls close to tree, gaze up from grassroots,
Midwest ocean floor.
Vs. 2
In 1970s no store-front vacancies on town square,
I learned to read and turn drum key, but suddenly,
I had wrong record in my hand, and my sister put it back,
leads to descendants of the 60s in the New Wave rack.
Chorus
Tho I no longer need to ride with training wheels
and I no longer need to fish with cane pole
you will still remind me, wear your stocking cap and
get a flu shot, and have you voted yet?
'Cause you backed the saxophone, trips, and student loans,
you can hear that thru the bass line even if
it all blows up or blows over, there is no candidate for me.
Vs. 3
The only place to buy in small town are the 45s
at flower shop, 78s on old Victrola model-crank.
Dad knew that Chris had cassettes that play
in his new Chevrolet, everything in notes that's
not a song is chipped away
Vs. 3 counter vocal
Wilsons of California, Wilsons of Minnesota do move me.
Held up by music, outer space, Cheap Trick and Human League relate by marriage
Chorus, Vs. 1 reprise, Chorus
